ADHD

Q&A

ADHD begins early in life when nerve connections in the brain develop differently compared to a neurotypical brain. Knowing that ADHD originates in the brain is essential for two reasons.

First, it means that brain activity (not purposeful choices) drives ADHD symptoms. And second, your brain continuously learns and builds new nerve connections. With holistic support from the PMA Assessment and Counseling team, you can learn skills that dramatically improve your life.

The symptoms depend on which of the following three types of ADHD you or your teen have: Predominantly inattentive

ADHD Inattentive ADHD is more than daydreaming or not paying attention. People with inattentive ADHD often lose important items, are easily distracted, miss crucial details, and have difficulty staying organized.

You or your teen may forget tasks or start but not finish chores. People with inattentive ADHD often avoid activities requiring intensive mental focus.

Predominantly hyperactive-impulsive ADHD Hyperactive behaviors are easy to identify.

Teens and adults may fidget, talk a lot, interrupt others, and stay in constant motion. You may feel restless or frustrated in situations where you must wait your turn or be still.

Impulsivity means acting without thinking. For example, you may make a fast decision and put it into action before realizing it’s dangerous.

Combined ADHD Combined ADHD means you have some inattentive and hyperactive-impulsive symptoms.
